This is one of my favorite tracks off the new album Airtight’s Revenge. Now, I can’t say I’ve been a longtime fan of Bilal. In fact, I have to raise my hand and get my late pass. He’s definitely someone I’d heard of, but didn’t pay much attention to. I just lumped him in with all those “neo-soul” singers who never made me break my stride. But I could tell from Twitter that there was a lot of buzz around him and then–boom!–the album shows up in the mail (shout out to Jessica from Co-Sign for the look!). What’s immediately evident is that he’s really pulling in his classical jazz training and, in fact, there are at least a couple of experimental tracks on the album. All commendable.
So I’m working on a more thoughtful review, but in the meantime, this is the song that stick with me. It was particularly affecting once I found out he’d written it for his two sons, one of whom has Sickle Cell Anemia and the other is autistic.
Check it out.
