BK THIS WEEK: Shaka King Kicks Off Luminal Theater’s “Beyond The Cut” Series — 4/20

It’s NYC so, as usual, there are lots of choices this week. For all you film buffs, we encourage you to check out film editor Curtis John’s discussion series, Beyond The Cut.  The inaugural event takes place at Weeksville Heritage Center and features filmmaker Shaka King, who directed the superb Newlyweeds.  Of the series, Curtis notes:

The career journey  of influential artists who work in film, art and culture are examined, with emphasis on how live audience members can learn from and share these stories.

SHAKA KING, our first esteemed guest, is a Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn raised, award-winning filmmaker, known for his bold and challenging film work. “Newlyweeds” (2013), King’s ambitious feature film debut, is a bitingly funny ‘black’ stoner comedy and character study of two young people who refuse to begin to take their lives more seriously.

This first season will shed a continuous light on the contributions of African-American influencers who live or work in and around Bedford-Stuyvesant, focusing on the impact their work has on the world and their community.

Looks to be an exciting series, especially from the standpoint of demystifying business and career paths.  Check it out!
