First, my wife goes to a stoop sale yesterday and comes back with David Henderson’s ‘Scuse Me While I Kiss The Sky: Jimi Hendrix: Voodoo Child. How lucky am I, but that’s a whole ‘nother story.
Then I get a heads-up from my friend Fikisha that the 2008 Experience Hendrix national tour kicks off next week, running October 14 – November 7. This is an official Hendrix event, produced by the Hendrix estate and sponsored by Gibson Guitars. It features name artists who’ll be performing music written by and associated with Jimi. The list of confirmed artists includes:
- Blues giant Buddy Guy
- Contemporary guitar greats Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Eric Johnson
- Cesar Rosas and David Hidalgo of Los Lobos
- Aerosmith‘s Brad Whitford
- Hubert Sumlin, the Mississippi-born guitarist who worked with both Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters
- Eric Gales
- Mato Nanji of Native American roots band Indigenous
- Chris Layton, the legendary drummer for Stevie Ray Vaughan’s Double Trouble
Go, and you’ll also get to hear Mitch Mitchell (drums) and Billy Cox (bass), the same Jimi Hendrix Experience rhythm section that played behind Jimi at such landmark rock festivals as Woodstock and the Isle of Wight. Once again they’re onboard to celebrate the guitarist’s enduring legacy. Special guests will be announced as the tour progresses. The first is Doors guitarist Robby Krieger.
