Outside of the glare of the mainstream, there is–and always has been–a lot of creative, intelligent and dope hip hop being made. One such artist I’m getting to know is Pigeon John (above, left) who, along with artists like Jurassic 5 and Freestyle Fellowship, is an alum of the Good Life Cafe and a veteran on LA’s underground hip hop scene.
His latest release, Dragon Slayer, is full of smartly told, often self-deprecating, stories and well-developed melodies. There’s a maturity here that’s refreshing to find, probably owing to the fact that he’s been in the game for more than a minute.
