If you’ll be in Austin on Saturday night, you should check out the official preview show for the Born In Flames tour. This is an all-female, hip hop meets rock tour featuring Tamar-Kali and MCs Jean Grae and Invincible (Disclosure: I’m an advisor to the tour).
If you can’t make that, then try to check them out the day before, on Friday, March 18, when they perform as part of the Girls Rock Camp Alliance Austin day party at Italo’s, located at 1600 East 6th Street, Austin 78702. This event is sponsored by Bitch Magazine and is free and open to the public. For this show, set times are:
- Tamar-kali — 3pm
- Invincible — 5:15pm
- Jean Grae — 6pm

Exclusive Preview of Born In Flames Tour at SXSW Music Festival
This month, the Born In Flames Tour will be making its official debut
at SXSW 2011 in Austin, Texas. With the tour pulling from both NYC
and Detroit for its line-up – Tamar-kali, Jean Grae, and Invincible
all come together as a unified front of some of today’s leading
independent women in music, bridging together both hip-hop and rock
audiences alike to create a new experience unlike any before it.
With a full tour still to come this fall, SXSW will serve as the ideal
launching pad for the Born In Flames Tour to introduce its initiative
to the music industry and fans alike. Those in Austin for the week
will have a chance to catch special sets from all three acts at Karma
Lounge on March 19th at 11pm – as Tamar-kali will be playing songs
from recently released debut album, Black Bottom, Jean Grae will be
giving fans a sneak preview of her upcoming release, Cake Or Death,
and Invincible, alongside Waajeed, will be premiering new material
from their upcoming full-length collaborative project.
The showcase and the subsequent tour will be documented by
Invincible’s documentary series, The Revival. At last year’s fest,
Invincible produced, performed and documented the first official women
in hip-hop SXSW showcase, and will premiere the film The Revival:SXSW,
at the Carver Museum, earlier Friday, March 18th, at 2 PM. Following
the screening, all three Born In Flames artists will perform at the
Girl’s Rock Camp day tent at Italo’s – which is a FREE all-ages event
open to the public (no SXSW wristband required), to show support for
the Girls Rock Camp Alliance, an official organizational partner of
the tour.
