Start talking about hellafied female vocalists and you’re into a list that includes Toshi Reagon, Tamar-Kali, Shelley Nicole, Imani Uzuri, Saidah Baba Talibah, JUST. TO NAME. A FEW.
And to that list one must add Karma Mayet Johnson, who I’ve gotten to know over the last year or so, especially after she completely put her foot in James Brown’s “It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World” during the Burnt Sugar musical theater extravaganza on the Godfather of Soul. For the time being, if she’s not singing that song, I don’t really need to hear it. Here she is in Exhibit A with Brandon Victor Dixon:
So I’m thrilled to let you all know that she’s in the middle of her own fundraising campaign to produce her debut album. As she writes on the IndieGoGo site:
Our $9000 funding goal will fully support the production of Karma’s first full length album of original music! We’re making a record, baby! Your help will pay for studio time, and checks for some of the most sought-after musicians in the world–got to pay the band, y’all! Your help will pay for the 4 M’s: mixing, mastering, manufacturing, and marketing! Your help will pay for the realization of this project according to the highest standards.
In return, Karma’s Miracle63 campaign will offer you delicious PERKS in consideration of your wonderful donations. You can taste from the smorgasbord of unique offerings, including: psychic readings, homemade gumbo, personalized poems, and invitations to private concerts, and of course free music!
Check out the campaign and, if you’re so moved, throw a few bucks in the kitty.
