@spoek_mathambo
So y’all have noticed this end of the year catch-up. Way it goes, right?
Anyway, I’ve been hearing about Johannesburg’s multi-hyphenate (MC-DJ-Graphic Designer-Illustrator) Spoek Mathambo (real name Nthato Mokgata) from our friends over at Society HAE, and I finally went to check him out. He’s part of a new crop of forward-looking African artists–even going so far as to call his sound “township tech”–who fosters progressive sounds and ideas, while holding onto pride in their culture.
He’s spent the last couple of years touring and working with a lot of people on the international music scene. Check out his site (via the link below) to get a wider taste of his music.
His new album, Father Creeper (“a reference to a classic in the world of sleazy South African tv jingles”), will be released by Sub Pop on March 13, 2012.
Ah, so much happening in Jo’burg. Wondering when there’ll be an new BLK JKS album? In the meantime, enjoy Spoek’s African gothic reinterpretation of Joy Division’s “She’s Lost Control”.
