As you may have heard, Questlove of The Roots, pulled together a Superjam for this year’s Bonnaroo Festival and the surprise guest was none other than D’Angelo. You all know it’s been “So what’s up with D’Angelo?” for the last 12 or so years, as the artist has been dealing with a lot of personal and musical issues. Some of that drama has been detailed by Michael Gonzales for WaxPoetics and by most recently by Amy Wallace for GQ.
But enough of the backstory. D’Angelo appears to be back. For this surprise performance, Questo pulled together the likes of “Captain” Kirk Douglas, The Roots’ guitarist; longtime producing partner James Poyser on keys; The Time’s Jesse Johnson (!) also on guitar; D’Angelo collaborator Pino Palladino on bass; and P-Funk’s Kendra Foster on vocals.
According to SPIN, D sang covers of Sly Stone’s “Babies Making Babies,” Led Zeppelin’s “What Is and What Should Never Be,” the Time’s “My Summertime Thang,” the Beatles’ “She Came In Through the Bathroom Window” and much more.
Check it out. The whole thing’s about 90 minutes. Enjoy!
H/T to Spin, Hypetrack and The Fader.
