Sandra St. Victor. What’s to be said that hasn’t already been said? The voice, the earthiness, the storytelling. It was all on display last weekend at BAMCafe as Sandra gave us all a taste of what’s in store when Oya’s Daughter drops in September. She blended new songs with old favorites (after all, she’s got several albums of solo work under her belt, so there’s plenty to choose from). One of my favorites was her cover of Roy Ayers’ “Funky Motion”. Hope that’s on the album.
That song was, I think, emblematic of the power of this band–longtime collaborators V. Jeffrey Smith and Tom Hammer, Danny Sadownick on percussion, guitar wunderkind Marcus Machado, bassist Leslie Lemon, and Abe Fogle on drums, Keith Fluitt, Damien Nova and one other (sorry, didn’t catch that name!) Darius Booker on backing vocals–they swung like crazy. But each of these guys are amazing in their own right, so no surprise. Funny, but I was thinking it’d be great to see Sandra with this band on a double bill with Bad Rabbits.
If you’re still bummed you missed this show, you can catch her on September 24 at Joe’s Pub. Tix are on sale now.
Thanks again to Stephen McCain for sharing photos from the event!
