Luqman Brown, aka MC Whistler, and the Dope Sagittarius crew drop a new video that’s so very much of the moment. In the aftermath of the killings of two unarmed black men, Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, as well as the killings of police officers in Dallas, “Black Empress” comes as a plea for salvation, and entreaty for the Black Empress to come down from the sun and enlighten us all. We’re all at–or close to–wit’s end. Will things devolve further into an endless cycle of killings, retaliation, and more killing? As was asked elsewhere on this site: What does it all mean? Where do we go from here? Given this, it makes sense that people might be looking for relief from the heavens. You know, that cosmic retribution for all the bad karma that people and institutions with supremacist notions have racked up against others? Here on planet Earth, change is slow. Why not just have some heavenly power come down and mete out judgement and restore those who’ve been wronged?
The video is a great melange of protest and cell phone video, police footage, and a driving swirl of guitars and drums that almost make it hard for the viewer to get his or her bearings. Almost. Kind of like this moment we’re in.
Take a look.
