Sean:
Just want to point out a small, yet important detail: Mint Condition. The Family Stand. The Roots. Earth, Wind and Fire. These are all bands. Why? Because they play instruments! Perhaps you should call next season’s show "Making the Group". See, you can’t have a "band" when no one plays instruments!
These young people are singers, performers or entertainers. But, let’s not call them artists, since it’s not clear that they’re creating their own material. They’re simply facilitating the expression of a group of songwriters and producers. This isn’t a bad thing, but let’s call it what it is, and not try to make it seem like it’s more than it is.
The term "band’ implies a lot. I’d like to see more precise use of language. That way, young people might have a sense that there’s room for them to grow from mere entertainers to actual artists, that they can aspire to more that just commercial success.
