Not yet familiar with girlfriend-girlfriend duo Catherine Harris-White (above, left) and Stasia Irons, better known as THEESatisfaction? It’s time to get up to speed.
The duo is based in Seattle, Washington where they write, produce and perform their feminista sci-fi, “avant-cosmic, Afro-Futurist” material. Influenced by King Britt and Sun Ra,according to their official bio, they “evoke equal parts Elaine Brown, Ursula Rucker and Q-Tip.”
What’s cool, too, about this video is that it was shot by the talented dream hampton. Now, I’ve known dream primarily as a writer–the first woman to edit The Source, as well as being the co-author of Jay-Z’s bestselling book Decoded–but forgot that she’s also a filmmaker, having directed last year’s doc Black August: A Hip Hop Documentary Concert, which takes a look at the annual hip hop concert for political prisoners put on by the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement, of which she’s a founding member.
Finally–and this is slightly random–what’s up with SubPop, their label? Not for nothing, but I’m sure a lot of people are like me who still associate Subpop with Nirvana, Soundgarden and Mudhoney. Even their current roster of Fleet Foxes, Dinosaur Jr., and No Age, to name a few, suggests a heavy indie rock bent. So, it’s kinda cool to see the label branching out with Stas and Cat, Shabazz Palaces and Spoek Mathambo.
That said, enjoy, and get your THEESatisfaction on!
