Nigerian director and photographer Andrew Dosunmu’s film Restless City is the next release from AFFRM, the collective that distributed founder Ava DuVernay’s I Will Follow and Alrick Brown’s Kinyarwanda. The film, an official Sundance 2011 selection, “tells the story of an African immigrant surviving on the fringes of New York City where music is his passion, life is a hustle, and falling in love is his greatest risk. ”
Really thrilled for Andrew (left in a photo by Keisha Scarville). He and I got to know each other (somewhat) years ago when our kids were in pre-school together. I say somewhat because he always seemed to be on a film or photography shoot. That’s all to say that brothaman’s been busy. In addition to the video for Les Nubians’ “Afrodance”, Andrew has created music videos for Angie Stone, Common, the late GURU, Keziah Jones, Tracy Chapman and Porno For Pyros, to name a few. He’s shot commercials for AT&T, Levi’s, General Motors and Kenneth Cole, among others. And he’s been a contributing photographer to magazines such as VIBE, The Fader, Vogue Homme – France, I-D, Interview, and many others.
To say the least, he’s a talent that is now poised for an even higher profile. And deservedly so.
Restless City opens on April 27 in NYC, LA and ATL. It then expands to Philly, Seattle, Detroit, Chicago and Washington DC on May 4. Click here for cities and theaters.
